The word pagoda refers to a place where there is a relic and a place of worship for Buddhist worshipers, taking on the appearance of a multi-storey tower, circular, octagonal or square, characterized by a flared or spiked roof. This is the form that the Indian stupa, or zedi, took in the Chinese world, in East Asia.
