Itsuku-shima (Itsukushima), also called Miya-jima (Miyajima, literally Island Sanctuary) is an island located in the Seto Inland Sea. The island is considered, in the Shinto religion, as a sacred island. There is neither maternity nor cemetery on the island, because this status prohibits that one is born there or that one dies there. In the same way, it is forbidden to fell trees there. The island is therefore covered with a relatively lush forest.
