The tatamis are traditionally made with layers of rice straw superimposed and intertwined then compressed constituting the mattress, called tatami-doko, and covered with a straw mat woven from high quality Juncus effusus ("scattered rush" or Igusa), called tatami-omote. The relatively strong odour of the new tatami is subsequently reduced.
